The Board shares several decades of biomedical R&D and biotechnology company management experience, including founding, growing and financing early stage biopharmaceutical ventures and successfully managing the clinical development and obtaining FDA approval of cancer therapeutics. The Company is intentionally being managed with a small number of full time employees and supplements its founders and internal management team by leveraging the expertise of various advisors and topic area experts on a recurring basis. As additional funding is obtained by the Company it will expand its internal workforce, as needed, to manage all of its development programs. John C. Kerr, Chairman John C. Kerr is a cofounder and seed-stage investor in Azaya. John received his B.A. from Stanford University and his J.D. from the University of Texas. He practiced corporate and securities law as a partner at Andrews & Kurth in Houston. John then served as chairman and CEO of American Century Corporation, a NYSE company in San Antonio in the 1980s. He has been an active investor and Board member in several life science companies since 1992, including Brava Therapeutics, a spin out from the MD Anderson Cancer Center and ILEX Oncology in San Antonio. John serves as a Trustee, past chairman and past interim president for Texas Biomedical Research Institute (formerly the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research). This research institute is the largest independent research institute in Texas. Michael T. Dwyer, President and CEO Mike leads the Company and is also member of Azaya’s Board of Directors. He brings over 18 years of experience in executive positions with successful Clinical Research Organizations and biopharmaceutical companies. He graduated from Angelo State University with a B.S. degree and spent 16 years practicing as an audit partner at Arthur Andersen & Co. in Houston and San Antonio. Mike has led 3 different CRO businesses, including two that specialize in conducting clinical trials in Oncology, one of which had 1,200+ employees in 20 countries. He has overseen more than 100 cancer clinical trials in these companies. Mike is also the former Executive Vice President and Chief Business Officer from ILEX Oncology, Inc. in San Antonio. ILEX had eight different cancer compounds under development and received FDA approval for two new cancer drugs. ILEX was successfully sold in December 2004 for $1 billion to Genzyme Corporation. Dr. Joseph P. Miller After receiving his medical degree and completing his internship and residency at Duke University Medical School, Joe joined South Texas Radiology Group (STRG) in 1976. Dr. Miller is certified by the American Board of Radiology. Since joining STRG, Joe has been instrumental in growing STRG from a group of six general radiologists to an organization of more than 70 radiologists who specialize in all areas of diagnostic, interventional and oncological radiology benefiting patients in South Texas and all of San Antonio's major hospital groups. Foreseeing some of the major challenges confronting the delivery of radiology imaging services, Joe was instrumental in founding South Texas Radiology Imaging Centers (STRIC) in 1999 which has evolved as the major outpatient imaging provider in San Antonio. Joe has been an enthusiastic investor in a number of San Antonio's emerging medical ventures and biomedical start-ups for the past 30 years. Dr. Gary West Gary is a graduate of the USAF Academy and completed medical school at the University of Colorado. After completing his residency and a research fellowship at Harvard University, Gary spent a 20 year career in the USAF. As a flight surgeon in the Air Force he was affiliated with the Proton Beam Facility in Los Alamos, New Mexico. He finished his Air Force career as the Chief of the Radiation Oncology Department, Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center and the Radiation Sciences Division, School of Aerospace Medicine at Brooks AFB in San Antonio. While in private practice he was an Associate Clinical Professor of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and on the staff of the Cancer Therapy and Research Center (CTRC) where he served as the Chief of Staff and a member of the CTRC Board of Governors. In addition, from 1992 to 2005, Gary served on the USAA Life Investment Trust Board of Governors and was chairman of the audit committee. He recently retired as the President of Alamo Oncology Associates. Gary is a member of many professional organizations including the American Society of Clinical Oncologists, the American Society of Therapeutic Radiologists and the American College of Radiation Oncology. |
